"Strawberry" is a painting I created in 2024 as I has just begun experimenting with watercolor on canvas. As I was just starting to move away from all paper onto canvas, I found that the texture of the canvas presents interesting challenges for creating clear images. Tiny details can be more difficult to articulate when the weave of the canvas holds little bits of water in a grid-like pattern. You will notice the canvas texture appear more pronounced in the areas with darker washes of color due to this. To work around this feature of watercoloring on a canvas, I decided to work larger, creating a few paintings like "Strawberry" that are inspired by macro photography, and blowing up the tiny details to be the entire size of the surface. Desipite the small size of this canvas, the subject itself is larger than the painted area, and helps to show detail despite the heavily textured working surface.
