This sweet little 4x6 is one of my oldest commercial pieces. So old, in fact, that the file I have of it on my computer is called "Art_Scan-0001". I took the reference photo for this piece while I was driving home from my college classes (stopped, of course, at a red light). If you know about my background, then you probably know I took this photo in the suburbs outside Savannah, Georgia, but really, this could be anywhere. It so encapsulates my enthusiasm for gritty industrial objects juxtaposed against the natural world, and I remember loving the painting process as I was getting back into watercolor. The inking feels like something out of a kids book: whimsical, wiggly lines to add texture, bringing bright personality even to the most mundane scene. We all look at dozens of red lights on our daily drives. But how often do we actually stop at one and take the opportunity to appreciate the world around us?
